Miriam McCoy

December 17, 1924 – June 14, 2023

We are deeply saddened to share that Miriam McCoy — a Texas State University Hero and co-namesake of the McCoy College of Business and McCoy Hall — passed away on June 14, 2023.

Miriam and her late husband, Emmett, helped shape the lives of Texas State University students and our community for decades. In 2004, they made the largest single donation in Texas State's history: $20 million to support the college of business. Through their immense generosity, the McCoy College of Business Foundation was established to invest and manage donations to the college. Emmett and Miriam McCoy Hall was named for them, opening in 2006, and the university presented them with honorary doctorates in 2007.

Miriam and Emmett moved the headquarters of McCoy’s Building Supply from Galveston to San Marcos in 1972. The couple frequently gave back to the communities that had supported their stores across the state. They were major contributors to area hospitals and the Hays Caldwell Women’s Center. Miriam was also instrumental in the development of the Miriam McCoy Shelter for Animals, now known as PAWS. She was also instrumental in the development of Grand Companions Humane Society in Ft. Davis. She had pet dogs all her life — always rescue dogs.

The couple celebrated more than 65 years of marriage and had four children, 10 grandchildren, and 29 great-grandchildren.

The McCoy family continues to be cherished friends and generous partners of the McCoy College of Business, and as we mourn Miriam’s passing, we offer our heartfelt condolences to her family. ✯
