Assistant Professor of Accounting

Dr. Binod Guragai, assistant professor of accounting at the McCoy College of Business, completed his bachelor’s in business studies in Nepal and soon moved to Texas to start his M.S. in accounting at University of Houston-Clear Lake. After completing his master’s degree, he spent a few years as a tax auditor for the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts in San Antonio.

Dr. Guragai always had a passion for teaching, which lead to pursuing his Ph.D. in accounting from the University of North Texas from 2013-2017. He spent a couple years at the University of Nevada, Reno as an assistant professor of accounting after graduation. In June of 2019, he found his way back to Texas and started his position as an assistant professor of accounting at McCoy College.

As a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Dr. Guragai brings a unique perspective to his teaching and research methodologies.

“Having a CPA and CFE allows me to understand the complexity of accounting topics and the importance of internal control efficiencies within a firm,” said Dr. Guragai. “That gives me a perspective on how fraud — as well as intentional and unintentional errors — can be detected and prevented.”

Dr. Guragai’s research largely focuses on the investor perspective of accounting numbers. His article titled “Market response to stock exchange listing deficiency notices: Evidence from Nasdaq” was recently published in Advances in Accounting

“Mostly, my research projects have focused how investors value accounting numbers,” said Dr. Guragai. “I have also started working on research projects that cover corporate governance, effects of changes in accounting regulation, and audit matters.”

Additionally, Dr. Guragai serves on the Dean's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Advisory Council at McCoy College. This group is responsible for informing and influencing the college’s efforts to foster an inclusive, accessible, and equitable environment where all stakeholders feel supported and valued.

“I think the biggest advantage about being on this committee is seeing first-hand that the college cares about these issues,” said Dr. Guragai. “Once I started connecting with this committee, I could see that the college is trying its best to bring these issues together — to bring about more diversity and value diversity.”

Dr. Guragai lives in Austin and enjoys spending time with friends and family in the community. He also has a four-year-old son, and they look forward to attending Nepalese festivals in the area and playing volleyball once a week. ✯
