Welcome to the inaugural issue of TXSTMcCoy Magazine!

When the McCoy College of Business began offering degree programs 53 years ago, there were 1,854 students and 23 faculty members. Back then, we were known as the School of Business Administration at Southwest Texas State University.

Today the college is home to 127 full-time faculty in five academic departments. We offer six undergraduate degree options and six graduate programs.

At our spring 2023 commencement ceremony, we added 623 new workforce-ready graduates to our business alumni, now totaling 43,739.

One thing still remains the same: our purpose. The McCoy College of Business is a diverse and vibrant learning community united in our belief that business makes a world of difference, and our students merit a world of possibilities. We are igniting change that reverberates far beyond Texas State.

This new online magazine will serve as a touchpoint for our alumni — as well as our students, parents, campus colleagues, donors, corporate partners, and other stakeholders — to see what our McCoy College community is doing. Here we will share our students’ successes, alumni achievements, and faculty research. We want to showcase the McCoy College experience in feature stories that are both highlights and thank-you notes.

In this first issue, we open with the achievements of our CFA Institute Research Challenge team, which advanced to the 2023 Regional Semifinals for the Americas, placing among the top 12 teams in the U.S. and among the top 17 in North and South America.

Our second story features alumnus Doug Foshee (BBA ’82), whose generous gift of $1 million to the Student Success Center will help ensure that McCoy College Students, especially first-generation students, will have the resources they need to get ahead early.

We offer a faculty research highlight on Dr. Maggie Wan, associate professor of management, whose efforts are making real-world impacts on work-life research, minority business growth, and business education.

This issue also includes a feature on spring 2023 graduate Claire Heleniak, who has displayed remarkable resilience and leadership while coping with loss. An inspiration to her peers and professors, she earned her undergraduate degree with a double major in marketing and computer information systems.

Finally, we are delighted to share a sneak peek at our new Student Success Center, housed here in McCoy Hall. Construction began during spring break in March, and the facility will open for our students in fall 2023.

We invite you to have a look around the webpages of the magazine. Share the stories with your friends. Post them to social media. And be sure to add your career and life updates to our new Class Notes via the online form linked on the magazine’s homepage.

Once a Bobcat, always a Bobcat.

Sincerely,
