Javier Chapa got the film bug in the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M, where he was asked to train "military extras" on Ed Zwick's Gulf War action-drama Courage Under Fire. This experience inspired Chapa to move to Los Angeles after graduating from law school, where he persisted in search of projects that would draw on his personal experience and showcase and celebrate his Latino culture. Made for $25k, Chapa’s debut feature film, Harvest of Redemption, is a true story and bilingual depiction of the struggle of migrant farm workers, which won Best Foreign Drama at the 2007 International Family Film Festival sponsored by Warner Bros. and Dreamworks.

In 2021, Chapa and Fifth Season produced the film Blue Miracle, starring Dennis Quaid and an all-Latino cast. This film was nominated for a Dove Award, named Movieguide’s most inspirational film of the year, and was ranked #2 worldwide on Netflix during its release. His film, The Long Game—starring Jay Hernandez, Dennis Quaid, and Cheech Marin—premiered at SXSW® in 2023 and won the Audience Award. He most recently wrapped production on two films: Rosario, an intelligent and chilling horror film starring Emeraude Toubia and David Dastmalchian, and Jenni, a drama based on the late Mexican-American superstar Jenni Rivera for VIX+. Chapa’s most recent release, The Black Demon, is a shark thriller starring Josh Lucas that achieved success on Amazon Prime and topped the charts in the US and LATAM for weeks.

Chapa is proud of his heritage. He was selected to be part of Latino Leaders Magazine. In 2017, he was asked by Academy Award Winning Director Alejandro González Iñárritu to participate in a virtual reality project, Flesh and Sand (Carne y Arena), which “plunges viewers into the harsh life of an immigrant.” The film was awarded the first Special Achievement Academy Award in over 20 years by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Chapa resides in Toluca Lake, California, with his wife and their seven rescue dogs. ✯
